Fastpitch Rules

Sportsmanship

Managers and coaches, you are responsible for the conduct of everyone associated with your team. If you or anyone from your organization—whether it be a coach, player, parent, or guest—becomes disrespectful to anyone (including umpires) or is disruptive to the game, you will be given a warning. You will be asked to address the situation with your team members or guests.

If the disrespectful behavior or disruption continues, the manager and the individual responsible will be removed from the game and the complex. Should the individual(s) refuse to leave immediately, the game will be stopped until they have vacated the premises. If the person(s) fail to leave within 5 minutes of being asked, the game will be forfeited by the team causing the disruption, and Law Enforcement will be called.

Tournament Rules

Addendums, Exceptions, or Additions to Our Governing Rules (Nfhs)

Dual Roster Players

Win Big Fastpitch LLC (WBF) allows dual-roster players for different age divisions within the same tournament. However, dual-roster players may only pitch in one age division. Players are NOT permitted to play on two teams within the same age division. If a team has 10 or more original players, they are not allowed to have dual-roster players. Coaches are not allowed to remove an original player to make room for a dual-roster player. The dual-roster rule is intended to be used in emergency situations only.

Roster Challenge and Forfeit

If no roster is turned in and a challenge is made regarding the roster, the challenge will be successful, and the team will forfeit the game for playing a non-rostered player. Additionally, the team will lose all subsequent challenges for the remainder of the tournament.

8U Division Rules

For the 8U division, there will be a 5-run rule per inning, including the final inning.

Roster Submission

Rosters must be submitted as a hard copy to the head table before the first game of the tournament. It is the manager/coach’s responsibility to ensure this is done, as online rosters are not accepted.

Coach/Parent Code of Conduct

If a coach or parent is ejected from a game for Code of Conduct violations, the ejection will be for one game. If the same coach or parent is ejected a second time during the same tournament, the ejection will be extended for the remainder of the tournament. If the second ejection happens during the team’s final game, the suspension will carry over to the team’s next tournament.

If a coach or parent is on probation at the time of the violation, the offender(s) will be ejected from the tournament and may be banned from all WBF events for a period determined by WBF.

Zero Tolerance for Aggression or Profanity
If a coach or parent uses the F-bomb or displays aggressive behavior toward anyone, there will be no warning. They will be immediately ejected for the remainder of the tournament and face a minimum 6-month ban from WBF tournaments. The final length of the ban will be determined by WBF.

Our Governing Rules Are NFHS

Please see any Addendums, Exceptions, or Additions below:

Pitching

Win Big Fastpitch LLC (WBF) has adopted the NCAA’s new pitching rules. These rules allow the pitcher to either keep their back foot off the pitching rubber or remain in contact with it. However, the pitcher cannot step back from their set position, or the pitch will be considered illegal.

Pitching Limits

Pitching limits are at the discretion of the Head Coaches. WBF prioritizes the safety and health of all players and encourages coaches and parents to be mindful of the number of pitches a player throws throughout the weekend to ensure player well-being.

Defensive Conferences

Each team is allowed up to three charged conferences without penalty during a seven-inning game. These conferences allow coaches or their representatives to confer with a defensive player or players. In extra innings, each team is permitted one charged conference per inning while on defense. The number of charged conferences is not cumulative.

Any coach, player, substitute, or bench personnel may request a conference.
Time for an obviously incapacitated player does not count as a charged conference.
A conference is not charged when the pitcher is removed from the game.

Defensive Coaches on the Field

Coaches are not allowed on the field during defensive play, except for the 8U division. All coaches, other than those in the 8U division, must remain inside the dugout or in the dugout doorway at all times. If, due to dugout constraints, the umpire determines that the coach cannot provide signals to the catcher, one defensive coach may stand outside the dugout to give signals.

Coaches are not allowed to bring any foreign items or objects onto the field and must not interfere with the game. Coaches who violate this rule will receive one warning before being restricted to the dugout. This rule ensures player safety and is required for insurance purposes.

Time Limits

Games are limited to 1 hour 15 minutes. No new inning after 1 hour 15 minutes. TURBO games will have a 60-minute time limit unless specified otherwise. Be ready 30 minutes before game time.

Umpire Fees

Each game will have two umpires. The fee is $50 per team per game, to be paid at the plate meeting before the game starts. Failure to pay will result in a forfeit.

Mercy Rules

Games end when any of the following criteria are met:

  • 12 runs after 3 innings (losing team must have 3 at-bats)
  • 10 runs after 4 innings (losing team must have 4 at-bats)
  • 8 runs after 5 innings (losing team must have 5 at-bats)

Batting Order

Extra hitters (EH) are allowed, but if a player is pitching, they cannot be listed as EH. Teams can use free defensive substitutions if they bat the entire lineup.

Designated Hitter

The Designated Hitter (DH) rule applies to all age divisions.

Home Team Election

  • Pool Play: Home team is determined by a coin flip. Dugouts are first-come, first-served.
  • Elimination Games: Higher seed chooses home team.
  • Championship Game: Higher seed chooses home team. In “IF” games, the previous home team becomes the visitor.

Illegal Pitches

In 8U and 9U, illegal pitches will not be called. The penalty for an illegal pitch is one ball awarded to the batter. No runners advance unless the bases are loaded, in which case it counts as ball four.

Injuries Involving Blood

A player or coach with a bleeding or open wound must be treated before continuing. If treatment is reasonable, they may stay in the game. If there is excessive blood on the uniform, it must be changed before returning. The re-entry rule does not apply to bleeding injuries.

Rainouts

In case of rain delays or cancellations:

  • 4+ games played: No refund/credit.
  • 1-3 games completed: Prorated credit for future events. No refund after 3 innings.
  • No games completed: Full refund.
  • Wristband credit: Valid for 60 days.
  • One-day tournaments: No credits.
  • Sunday rainouts: No wristband credits.

Tiebreakers

  • Win-Loss Record
  • Head to Head (if applicable)
  • Fewest Runs Allowed (actual runs)
  • Run Differential*
  • Runs Scored
  • Coin Flip

*Note: Max run differential is +8 or -8 per game.

Forfeits

Forfeits are recorded as an 8-0 score. Forfeiting teams still pay umpire fees. If only one team forfeits, they must pay both umpire fees.

Courtesy Runners

Courtesy runners for the pitcher or catcher must come from the substitute pool or the last completed at-bat. If used multiple times in an inning, the same runner must be used.

Cleats

Metal cleats are prohibited for 8U-12U. Molded cleats or turf shoes are required for all divisions when playing on turf fields.

Bats

For 8U-18U, bats must comply with NFHS (ASA) rules, featuring either a 2000 or 2004 ASA Approval Stamp or a USA Stamp. Bats without these stamps are illegal. If a player enters the batter’s box with an illegal bat, or it is discovered during the game, the ball is dead immediately, and the batter and coach will be ejected. Runners do not return if put out on the play.

The Only Exception to This List Is the Ghost Gold Bats. Both the Gold and Blue Ghost Bats Will Be Allowed in Wbf Tournaments.

Texas Tiebreaker

In the event of a tie after regulation, the Texas Tiebreaker will be used:

  • 1st inning: Last completed at-bat starts on second base, with no outs.
  • 2nd inning: The last completed at-bat moves to third base, and the batter before moves to second base (no outs).
  • From the 3rd inning on: The last completed at-bat goes to third base, the previous batter to second base, and the next one to first base (no outs). Pitchers/Catchers follow all Courtesy Runner/Substitution rules.

Suspended / Regulation Games

Games suspended before reaching regulation innings will be resumed or considered complete based on the last full inning. In Pool Play/Consolation Games:

If the game is tied, it ends in a tie.
If not started before transitioning to Bracket Play, the game ends in a 1-1 tie.

Elimination Games

A) If an Elimination game doesn’t start or is incomplete due to weather/darkness, WBF will revert to Bracket Seeding.
B) If one inning is not completed, WBF reverts to Bracket Seeding.
C) If the game is incomplete, WBF will use the last completed inning. If tied, the higher-seeded team wins.
E) If a lower-seeded team upsets a higher-seeded team, the winner assumes the higher seed’s ranking for award purposes.

9-Team Bracket

  • The 8th-seed faces the 9th-seed, while the 1st seed receives a bye.
  • The remaining games: 4/5, 2/7, and 3/6. Losers of 8/9, 4/5, 2/7, and 3/6 move to Silver Bracket.
  • The 1st seed plays the winner of 8/9, and the loser of this game is eliminated.
  • The 1st seed’s bye counts as a round and game for the 4-game guarantee.

8U KID PITCH-SPECIFIC RULES: AT THE 8U LEVEL ONLY:

  1. The pitching distance is 35 feet.  (During Coach pitch, the Coach does not have to stand on the pitching rubber, but the coach must have his/her feet inside the circle when pitching.)
  2. The time limit is 1 hour and 15 minutes. The championship game will also be 1 hour and 15 minutes, still using 5 runs per inning. The games will be played according to the time limit. Run rules do not apply.
  3. No lead-offs.  NO STEALING.  The runner may begin to run when the ball crosses the plate.
  4. Pass Balls – This is ONLY from first to second or second to third.
  5. No stealing home — a runner starting a play at 3rd Base may only advance home on a batted ball or when forced home by a walk, hit batter, or other force play (bases loaded).
  6. If the pitcher walks two batters in the same inning, the Coach pitch rule applies. After two walks in the same inning, any time the pitcher walks a batter, the batter will remain at bat with the number of strikes thrown by the pitcher.
  7. When the Coach enters the game, he/she will resume the count on the batter. The coach will pitch until the batter hits the ball into fair territory or strikes out. Once this at-bat is complete, the player/pitcher will return as a pitcher. (When the coach is pitching, the player/pitcher MUST have one foot within the pitching circle.)
  8. STOPPING RUNNERS:  This can be done in two different ways.  First, any defensive player can be in front of the lead runner.  Once this happens, the Umpire will call time, and the play is dead.  Second, the PITCHER must be in the pitching circle with the ball, raise her hands, and yell “TIME.”  At this point, the play is dead.  Once the Umpire stops the play, the halfway line determines if the runners must go back to the previous base touched or proceed to the next base. (Half-way Line – a real or imaginary line 30ft from each base.  When the play is deemed dead by the Umpire, if the runner is past the Halfway line, they will be given the next base.  If the runner is behind the Halfway line, they must return to the previous base).
  9. Walk By Player (Pitching).  When ball 4 is thrown, it is a dead ball situation, and the runner may only advance to first base. When forced, additional runners may advance to the next base.
  10. A runner starting from 1st or 2nd Base may advance home as a batted ball continuation of a play (there is NOT a mandatory “red light” at 3rd Base for a play in motion).
  11. 8U is closed bases, meaning a batter may not run on a dropped 3rd strike; the batter will be automatically out on a dropped 3rd strike.
  12. Bunting is allowed.  But no Slash bunting, meaning a batter cannot square to bunt, then pull back and swing.
  13. 5 runs an inning, no matter what inning or game.  This holds for Saturday and Sunday games.
  14. The infield fly rule DOES NOT apply.

8U COACH PITCH RULES:

  1. The pitching distance is 35 feet. (During a Coach pitch, the Coach does not have to stand on the pitching rubber, but he/she must have his/her feet inside the circle.)
  2. The time limit is 1 hour and 15 minutes.  The MAXIMUM number of runs per inning is 5.    The game will be played to the time limit UNLESS BOTH coaches agree to finish the game early.  In the event that one team is behind by more than 5 runs when the game time expires, the game will end.
  3. NO STEALING.  The runner may begin to their lead when the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand.  The catcher may attempt to pick off the runner. If the catcher throws the ball to a base, the runner MUST return to that base.  This is a LIVE ball and the runner(s) can advance AFTER touching the base they came from. This rule is intended to teach runners to lead off, not steal.
  4. Pass Balls—There are no pass balls, and a runner cannot advance on a pitched ball the catcher misses.
  5. No stealing home — a runner starting a play at 3rd Base may only advance home on a batted ball OR if the catcher attempts a pick-off throw to THIRD base.
  6. During Coach pitch, the coach will pitch FIVE pitches or THREE strikes, whichever occurs first, to the batter.  No matter the strike count, the batter must hit or foul off the fifth pitch to avoid being out. There are NO walks by the Coach or pass balls.  The Coach will make every effort to not obstruct any play.  If the Umpire feels the Coach did obstruct the play, the batter will be called out, and ALL runners will return to their base before the obstruction.  If the Coach is hit with a batted ball, the play is dead, and the batter will be given first base. ONLY  forced runners will advance in this situation.
  7. THERE WILL BE NO COACHING FROM THE COACH PITCHING.  If this occurs, the first occurrence of a strike will be added to the batter.  In the second and all subsequent occurrences, the batter will be called out.
  8. Delay of Game Rule.  If it is deemed by the umpire the Coach pitching is intentionally delaying the game by throwing poor pitches or telling the batter not to swing, the Coach will be removed by the Umpire and time added to the game.  This rule is at the sole discretion of the umpire.  Coaches have 20 seconds to pitch the ball from the time they receive the ball from the catcher or umpire.
  9. STOPPING RUNNERS:  This can be done in two different ways.  First, any defensive player can be in front of the lead runner.  The player MUST raise their hands and yell “TIME”.  Once this happens, the Umpire will call time, and the play is dead.  Second, the PITCHER must be in the pitching circle, with the ball, raise her hands and yell “TIME”.  At this point, the play is dead.
  10. A runner starting from 1st or 2nd Base may advance home as a batted ball continuation of a play (there is NOT a mandatory “red light” at 3rd Base for a play in motion).
  11. 8U is closed bases meaning a batter may not run on dropped 3rd strike, the batter will be automatically out on a dropped 3rd strike.
  12. Bunting is NOT allowed.  NO Slash bunting is allowed, meaning a batter cannot square to bunt, then pull back and swing.
  13. 5 runs an inning, no matter what inning or game.  This holds for Saturday and Sunday games.
  14. The infield fly rule DOES NOT apply.
